At the age of 17, John enlisted in the United States Navy to serve his country during World War II. John served his basic training in San Diego, California beginning April 6, 1943. Upon completing his basic naval training he served aboard the USS Hammondsport, USS Harris and the USS Ashland LSD-1. During his time in the US Navy, John participated in the assault landings on and capture of Tarawa (Gilbert Islands), Kwajalein & Entwetok (Marshall Islands), Saipan & Tinian (Mariannas Islands), Leyte & Luzon (Phillipines) and Iwo Jima (Volcano Islands). At the time of his honorable discharge on March 4, 1946 his rank was Machinist's Mate, Second Class.

John returned to Vinita, Oklahoma immediately following his discharge from the service, where he met his future bride, Miss Flora Ellen Ketchum. John and Flora were married on May 4, 1946 in Columbus, Kansas. John and Flora moved to Bartlesville, where they spent the majority of their married life. John and Flora were blessed with one daughter, Shelli Renee in 1963.

John worked for List Oldsmobile until he retired. After he retired, he decided he wasn't quite ready to stop working and then went to work for Long's Automotive and Jane Phillips Medical Center. John and Flora were active members of the 1st Church of God in Dewey, Oklahoma until they relocated to Edmond, Oklahoma in 2006 to be closer to their daughter.

John was an avid fan of Oklahoma State Football and Basketball and enjoyed his season tickets and the tailgating weekends in Stillwater with family and friends. John loved to travel and was always willing to pack a bag and take the RV on the road. Other passions included his love of the OKC Thunder Basketball team and his love of fishing. His last vacation was a trip to Southern Louisiana to do some Red Fishing with hopes of catching a "big" one.

John is survived by his wife, Flora of Edmond; his only daughter, Shelli of Edmond, and his special niece Jeanne and husband Thomas of Weatherford, TX and their children, Stormi Talley of Stillwater and Charles Talley of Weatherford, TX, along with many nieces and nephews.
