Ephraim enlisted as a Private on 05 January 1864 at Randolph, Dakota County, Minnesota. He served in Company D of Brackett's Battalion, Minnesota Cavalry with his brother Josiah Reed Brooks. Ephraim mustered-out on 01 June 1866. Another brother, William Henry Brooks, served with Hatch's Battalion, Minnesota Cavalry, during the same time period.
Following the Civil War, Ephraim returned to Randolph, Dakota County, Minnesota and married Rhoda Sarah Paul in 1868. They had six children- Marshall Wesley (b. 1869), Arthur M. (b. 1877), Eliza (b. 1880), Nettie May (b. 1883), Esther C. (b. 1886), and Sadie M. Brooks (b. 1893). Ephraim worked as a farmer in Dakota and Big Stone counties until his death in Big Stone County, Minnesota on 08 August 1924.
