George W. Branyan, 75, of 1552 W. River Road, died Friday in Leila Hospital, where he had been a patient for about 10 days. A former truck driver, Branyan was a janitor in Springfield elementary schools from 1954 until his retirement in 1966. He played drums with area bands for about 40 years. In the 1920s, he played for the Springfield Jazz Band. Then for 14 years he played for the Fred Bush square dance band and later for the Howard Martin band. Born in Marion, Branyan came to the Battle Creek area from Traverse City in 1917. He was an independent truck driver for about 37 years. Survivors are his widow, the former Pauline Heritz; sons, Russell R. Branyan of Gallup, N.M., and Wesley of Menominee; a daughter, Mrs. Billy (Marilynn) Kelly of Manistee; a brother, Rollin Branyan of Boca Raton, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Mary Hevel of Pontiac; nine grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
