A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 28, 2004, for Clara Berry.

She was born on March 14, 1903, in Ferndale, and passed away on May 20, 2004, in Fortuna, at the age of 101. Clara was born to Marie and Joseph Oeschger. She attended the local schools and excelled in all sports. She enjoyed her life on the family farm, where she worked and played with her four brothers and one sister. Being from a baseball family, she took great pride in being able to catch those "fast balls," thrown by her brothers and their professional ball friends.

In a double-ring ceremony with her sister Ida, Clara married Seward Berry in 1923 at the Church of the Assumption in Ferndale. After living in Livermore for a few months, they moved back to Ferndale, where she lived in her own home until she was 99 years of age. Being unable to stay alone, she moved to Sequoia Springs and then to St. Luke Manor in Fortuna until her death.

Clara was a wonderful homemaker and was known for her delicious rolls and cookies. Every grandchild had their own favorite cookie and upon their visits were rewarded with their own cookie can to take home with them. She loved having people drop in to see her, and the coffee pot was always on. The front door was open to all who stopped by.

Her family was her pride and joy, and she was always interested in all their trials and tribulations. When asked on her 100th birthday what it was like to have lived so long, her answer was, "There has been a lot of happiness and a lot of tears -but that’s life!"

She was preceded in death by her husband, Seward; parents, Marie and Joseph Oeschger; brothers, Joseph, Vernon and George; and sister, Ida Murray.

She is survived by two daughters, Diana Frey and husband David of Ferndale, and Joan Nilsen and husband Edward of Eureka; brother, Walter and sister-in-law Olivia of Ferndale; and sister-in-law, Nancy Oeschger of Rohnert Park; grandchildren, Deborah Guggenbickler and husband John, Cynthia Myers and husband Wayne, Kevin Frey, Kim Salazar and husband Ruben, Karen Salinas and husband Arnie, Nancy Sapozink and husband Mike, Matt Nilsen and wife Pam, Mark Nilsen and wife Marilyn, and Jennifer Aiello and husband Brian; great-grandchildren, Sean Guggenbickler and wife Sue, David Guggenbickler and wife Laurie, Robert Guggenbickler and wife Sally, Aura Guggenbickler, Elizabeth Guggenbickler, Samuel Myers, Jessica Myers, Benjamin Myers, Kylee Savage, Holly Frey, J.D. Frey, Mary Emily Frey, Coleman Frey, Ryan Anderson and wife Sara, Torie Anderson, Stephanie Salinas, Natalie Salinas, Rachael Sapozink, Andrew Sapozink, Stacey Nilsen, Scott Nilsen, Brian Nilsen, Michael Nilsen, Johnny Nilsen, Brooklyn Aiello, Braden Aiello; and great-great grandchildren, Brian Guggenbickler, Andrea Guggenbickler, Janelle Guggenbickler, Caleb Guggenbickler and Zachary Anderson.

Friends are invited to attend the Vigil Service Thursday, May 27, 2004, at Goble’s Chapel in Fortuna, at 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held Friday, May 28, 2004, at 2 p.m. at The Church of the Assumption in Ferndale, with Father Robert Benjamin officiating.

Special thanks to all her caregivers at St. Luke’s and especially to Brian, Ryan, and Katie, who made her life happier, and to all her friends who visited, bringing her a ray of sunshine.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in her name to your favorite charity.
