Mrs. Frances Howell Grigsby Baker, of 404 Leake Ave, died yesterday (Sunday, 14 Aug 1960) morning at Vanderbilt Hospital after an illness of several years.
Services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, 16 Aug 1960) at the residence. Dr. H. Franklin Paschall, pastor, of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Mrs. Baker was the widow of Henderson Baker, whom she married in 1906. Born and raised in Nashville, she was the daughter of Edith Serena "Rena" Howell (1849-1924) and Andrew Jackson Grigsby, Sr. (1850-1941), treasurer of the Nashville Banner for more than 40 years.
Mrs. Baker was prominently identified in the religious and social life of the community. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church, where her Grandfather, Dr. R. B. C. Howell, served as pastor and was the first woman to become a member of the Baptist Sunday School board, a position she held for 25 years.
She was also a member of the Women's Missionary Society of First Baptist Church where she served as treasurer for many years.
Mrs. Baker was a member of the Old Woman's Home auxiliary and a board member of the Old Woman's Home. She also held memberships in the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, the Ladies Hermitage association, the Centennial Club and the Belle Meade Country Club.
A charter member of the Kipling Club, Mrs. Baker was noted for her numerous book reviews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henderson Baker, who died in February of 1951; brother, Andrew Jackson "Jack" Grigsby, Jr. who died in Dec. of 1957; also preceding her in death was her sister, Mary Judith "Polly" Grigsby, in March of 1925 (wife of Duncan Howell Butterfield). Polly and Duncan were the parents of two daughters, Andrena Grigsby Butterfield (m.1-John Reid Woodward, died 1986; m.2-Donald Frederick Phillips, died 2001) and Bette Baker Butterfield (m. Robert Hewitt DeMoss, Sr. on 2 Nov 1939). Andrena (age 9) and Bette (age 7) were raised in the home of their Aunt, Frances Howell Grigsby Baker and husband, Henderson Baker, after the death of her sister, Polly, in March, 1925.
She is survived by her brother, James Scott Grigsby, Sr.; nephew, James Scott Grigsby, Jr. She is also survived by her niece, Judith Grigsby DeMoss and nephew, Robert Hewitt DeMoss, Jr.
