Bennie J. Angelo was a veteran who survived the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941. He was a life resident of Canton and was a 1937 graduate of McKinley High School and an avid Bulldogs fan. A member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, McKinley Senior Boosters, McKinley Alumni, Louisville Booster Club, Louisville Touchdown Club, Perry Eagles, V.F.W. Post #3747, American Legion Post #44, Canton, Moose Lodge #233, Canton Ex-News Boys, Hall of Fame and the Pearl Harbor Survivors. An Army Veteran of World War II, he was one of the remaining few Pearl Harbor survivors and was honored as the Veteran of the Year for Stark County in 2006. He was a retired inspector for Republic Steel with 43 years of service. Preceded in death by his parents Pasquale and Josephine Seletti Angelo, wife Sari Ann Shannon Angelo, son-in-law Tom Arbaugh, brothers Phillip and Anthony Angelo, sisters Angeline Grossi and Elizabeth Diana. Bennie was a 22-year-old Army anti-aircraft gunner, was eating breakfast in a tent at Pearl Harbor in Dec. 7, 1941, when he saw a bullet knock a mess kit out of a soldier in front of him. Then he saw Japanese planes emblazoned with the large red circles strafing and dropping bombs as machine gun fire rained down and sirens blared. Angelo years later said he grabbed a rifle, broke into an ammunition locker to get bullets and shot at the planes, as he saw U.S. planes get shot down and black smoke fill the skyline. On returning to Stark County, the 1937 McKinley High School graduate reclaimed his job at Republic Steel Corp. where he retired in 1983. He and his wife Sari Ann, who died in 1996, had four children. He died unexpectedly at his home at age 87.
