William was the second child and only son of John William and Sarah (Polly) McIntosh. He was raised with his five sisters in Darke County, Ohio. He married there 21 May 1845 to Jane Harlan (1831-1881). They had one son and a daughter, Florinda (b. 1849-no death found) before the family moved to Wayne Twp. Randolph County, Indiana. Two more children were born there before a move to Van Buren County, Iowa, where 5 more children were born. In 1868, "the family moved to the wilderness of Kansas, where they helped with the very first settling of that section of our country. They built roads and bridges, established schools and churches. William was a pioneer preacher of that time, and rode for miles on horseback, preaching the gospel here and there to the people of that section" (Gospel Advocate; Aug. 18, 1932, p. 924). Their 9th and last child was born here. After Jane died in 1881, William married Priscilla (Damron) Allen 23 Jan. 1883.
