FLORENCE - Rhonda Sue Hughes, 66, died Sunday, December 4, 2016, after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 9, 2016, at Waters-Powell Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Robbie Ott and Rev. Rex Hunter. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Rhonda was born in Florence, a daughter of the late Shelton Smith and Eulalie Lackey Hughes. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Winthrop College, where she double-majored in Spanish and Music. She earned a master’s degree in Spanish from the University of the Americas in Mexico. She was a teacher and choral director in Florence School District One, retiring after 26 years of service.

Rhonda was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Florence, where she was very active in the church’s music ministry.

She is survived by a sister, DeAnna H. (Jack) Galloway of Sumter, SC; nieces, Joy (Tim) Causey of Lexington, SC, and Wendie (Greg) Kilgore of Summerville, SC; great-nephew, Scott Causey; great nieces, Ashley Causey, Mary Frances Kilgore, and Sarah Claire Kilgore; aunts, Myrtle Lackey of Sumter, SC, and Blondine Still of Hanahan, SC; an uncle, J. P. Lackey of Greenville, SC; devoted friends, Ferebe and Gary Pearce of Florence; and her feline companion, Macie.

Rhonda was predeceased by her brother, Shelton Crisler “Cris” Hughes.
