Obituary in The Shreveport Times December 1, 2016:

Mr. Billy Jay Nance, 90, passed away on Monday, November 28, 2016 at Willis-Knighton North Hospital. Private family graveside services will be held on Friday, December 2, 2016 followed by a public Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. at Osborn Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Mr. Jerry Hodge of University Church of Christ. Interment will be at Forest Park West. Mr. Nance was a native of Thornton, TX and a resident of Shreveport, LA for 64 years. He was a member of the University Church of Christ.

Billy learned the value of hard work from his daddy and the love of family from his mother. Although he grew up in a small Texas farming community amongst a host of family and close neighbors, he decided instead to join the United States Navy to get an education and eventually served on the USS Breckenridge. While in the Navy he attended Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, where he met a young lady in Sunday school named Mary Lee. His parents taught him to worship and serve God wherever he was. Mary Lee and Billy married and moved to Austin where Billy attended the University of Texas and majored in petroleum engineering. Those that knew him knew of his love for the Longhorns.

After graduation, Billy worked for the Texas Company and eventually moved his family to Shreveport, where he formed multiple partnerships and two successful business ventures, including L and N Drilling Company and Smith Operating and Management Company. He worked hard, but still found time to fish, golf and play gin rummy. On Tuesdays, Billy and his best friend Jerry visited the sick and shut-ins. He loved his cards and his Petroleum Club buddies with Friday noon games being one of his greatest joys. Ironically, he loved nothing more than to dig in the dirt and work in the garden during retirement. He was affectionately known as Big Daddy - the devoted Christian, husband, father, and grandfather. To his family this name symbolizes the size of his heart and the love in his soul. He knew no boundaries when it came to giving. He was faithful, honest and humble in his daily living. His handshake was his word - a lost art of today. God, family and friends were his greatest treasures and he richly blessed those around him.

Mr. Nance was preceded in death by his parents, Bertha and Louie Nance, and brothers, Walker and Wayne Nance. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee (Dendy) Nance of 68 years; two daughters, Peggy Allyson Nance of Carrollton, TX and Sharon (Nance) Avant of Shreveport, LA; and one son, David J. Nance (wife Susan) of Shreveport, LA. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Stacey L. Avant (wife Lacy) of Spring, TX, Lindsey Avant McLaughlin (husband Brett) of Austin, TX, Avery Allyson Avant of Shreveport, LA, John L. Conner (wife Jennifer) of Lake Village, AR, and Katie Lee Nance of Shreveport, LA; and 7 great-grandchildren, Noelle Million, Mack McLaughlin, Gabriel Nance, Vivienne Avant, Millie McLaughlin, Savannah Avant, Teddy McLaughlin. Mr. Nance is survived by one sister, Mary Helen (Nance) Campbell (husband Bailey) of Tyler, TX.

Pallbearers will be Stacey Avant, John Conner, Brett McLaughlin, Bill Bolls, Wayne Ketcham, and Keith Munn. Honorary pallbearer will be Chuck Carter.

The family requests that memorials be made to University Church of Christ Family Care Ministry or local charity of choice . The family would like to express their heart-felt appreciation to Drs. Moller and Walton as well as the kind staff at Willis-Knighton for their exceptional care and compassionate support.

Billy fought the good fight all of his 90 years. His dancing blue eyes and his loving, kind spirit will be greatly missed as he has gone home to reap his reward.
