Gay F. Eggleston, life-long resident and citizen of Henry county, passed away quietly at the state hospital in Staunton, Va., Friday morning following a lingering illness that had lasted for a period of several months. The remains were brought to Martinsville, where they were laid to rest in the Oakwood Cemetery, attended by a large number of relatives and friends of the family, Saturday afternoon. The funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist Church by Rev. J. P. McCabe, the pastor, who also had charge of the last rites at the grave. The deceased was 68 years of age, and for many years a prominent citizen and merchant of this county. He had been in the mercantile business a number of years in Martinsville before locating in Ridgeway where for the past several years he continued to operate a retail store up until ill health forced him to give up his work. He is survived, besides his wife, who was Miss Bettie Coleman before her marriage, two daughters, Mesdames J. H. Cox of Martinsville and L. B. Kallam of Ridgeway; two brothers, John C. and William, both of Martinsville; two sisters, Mesdames Thomas Stegall of Martinsville and J.. L. Cox of Ridgeway. The active pall bearers were T. J. Coleman, E. J. Davis, H. C. Turner, C. K. McCray, Dr. R. R. Lee and Dr. C. P. Smith. Many relatives from a distance came here in attend the last rites paid to this well-known Henry County citizen.
