Katherine Ann Rutherford passed away Feb. 8 at her home following a long illness.

She was born Jan. 30, 1908, in Walla Walla, Wash., to Charles and Mabel Covington Nosier. She was a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and later received her teaching credentials at what is now the California State University at San Jose. A resident of Napa since the late 1920s, she pursued her career in elementary education at both John L. Shearer and the Salvador School here.

She was married to Napa attorney John Wesley Rutherford Sr. in Berkeley in the 1930s.

She enjoyed a long affiliation with the American Association of University Women and had served the organization as their president. Through her love of reading she was an active member of the book section of the A.A.U.W. and the group Contemporary Topics.

She volunteered generously of her time, first with the Red Cross during World War II, and later Community Projects, where she gave not only her time but donated her beautiful hand-knit items for sale at Community Projects Thrift Shop. She had won many awards for her knitted garments at Napa fairs.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John Wesley and Joan Louise Broughton Rutherford of Napa; two grandchildren; her sister, Caroline Holcomb of Sacramento; five nieces, three nephews, and a grandniece.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1969 and by her son, Stephen Wallace Rutherford, in 1963.

Friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Treadway and Wigger Funeral Chapel, 623 Coombs St. The Rev. Erwin E. Bollinger, pastor emeritus of Napa's First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be private at Tulocay Cemetery. Friends may call at Treadway and Wigger between the hours of 4 and 8 p.m.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the quality of care and grace with which the Hospice of Napa Valley cared for Mrs. Rutherford in her final illness.
