Gertrude Lorraine was named after a sister, Gertrude, who died when two years old. She was always known as Lorraine, but in Social Security and some church records was listed as Gertrude Lorraine.

Lorraine Uglum Torgerson, daughter of Annie and Iver Uglum was born at Grand Meadow, Mn. December 11, 1919 and passed away at St. Olaf Hospital, January 8, 1983 after a long illness of cancer.

In 1920 her family moved to Adams, Mn. where she attended grade school and graduated from Adams High School in 1936. She attended Waldorf College, Columbia University and the University of Minnesota and was employed in Minneapolis. Her marriage to Roy Torgerson took place at Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams on March 30, 1947. One son Roy, Jr. was born to this union. They resided in Adams, later moving to Rochester and returning in 1968 to Adams where they operated the Browse-n-Shop store. Lorraine was very active in promoting worthwhile community projects -particularly those pertaining to the handicapped and mentally retarded and was most sensitive to their needs to the extent she gave of herself unselfishly to help establish the Developmental Achievement Center and the Group Home in Adams. Both are living testimonials of her efforts.

She is survived by her husband, Roy of Adams, and a son Roy, Jr. of Adams; three sisters, Mrs. Harvey (Mabel) Schroeder, Lake Park, Ia.; Mrs. Alice Schwickard, Corona Del Mar, Ca.; Mrs. C.L. (Inez) Schissel, Adams, Mn.; nieces and nephews, four foster children, Michael, Manda, Kevin and Thomas Ness.

Memorial services for Lorraine were held January 11, 1983 at Little Cedar Lutheran Church with Rev. Allen Gunderson and Rev. Nancy Wigdal officiating with Marjorie Meier, organist and Jan Johnson, soloist. Blessed be her memory.

Personal genealogy lists her first name as Gertrude.

When Lorraine's father died in 1945, her signature on the death certificate was Lorraine Uglum Jansen or Jensen.
