"John Plants served in the Union Army. He was wounded at the battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864 when a leaden bullet weighing one ounce passed through his left arm between the wrist and elbow.

He was a cooper by trade and became affiliated with the Methodist Church and for more than fifty years lived a consistent Christian life.

He was active in politics and was an adamant Republican.

When a new church was built, Eddy Chapel, he sold the last milk cow he owned to finish paying the debt on the church so it could be dedicated debt-free.

He was married three times and fathered twenty children.

He first married Mary Mariah Smith in Washington Co., PA in 1853. She died June 6, 1865. She bore him seven children with only two living to adulthood.

He second married Sarah Catherine Hoschar, who bore him eight children.

He third married Emily Morris who bore him five children."
