Vernal “Pinky” Andersen, age 94, returned to his heavenly home on 4 November 2016 following a brief illness.

Pinky was born 26 May 1922 in Ogden to Vernal Andersen and May Neilson. He served in the Army Air Force from 26 June 1943 to 21 February 1946.

He married Nina Owen of Hunter in the Salt Lake Temple on 1 October 1947. They moved to Tooele in 1949.

Pinky worked at the Tooele Army Depot for twenty-two years and retired in 1971. He then worked as a custodian for the LDS Church until 1987.

Pinky and Nina served in the Canada Vancouver Mission for the LDS Church from October 1987 to July 1988. Upon their return, they volunteered at the Tooele Deseret Industries from 1990 to 1995.

Pinky was a true “Jack of all trades” and was happiest when he was building or fixing something for his family and friends. He lived a life of service, always volunteering to work at the LDS Church’s welfare farms and cannery and helping others until he lost his ability to see clearly due to macular degeneration in his later years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Arnold, Art, and John Ross; and grandson, Michael Andersen. He is survived by his wife, Nina Andersen, of Tooele; two sisters, Ruth Paxman of Sandy and Shirley Rakes of Riverton; a sister-in-law, Edna Andersen (John Ross), of Ivins; and children, Robert Andersen (Lynn) of Tooele, Gary Andersen (Barbara) of Sandy, Peggy York (Richard) of Kearns, James Andersen of Tooele, Connie Hendricks (Mike) of Tooele, Kaye Lopez (Henry) of Bountiful, and Scott Andersen (Taunya) of Murray. They have twenty-eight grandchildren, forty-nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at Redwood Memorial Estates Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road (1700 West), Taylorsville, on Monday, 14 November 2016 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. His funeral will be held in the Tooele Thirteenth Ward Meetinghouse, 1025 Southwest Drive, Tooele, on Tuesday, 15 November 2016 at 11:00 a.m., with a viewing prior from 10:00-10:45 a.m.

He will be interred in the Redwood Memorial Estates Cemetery.
