Sterling Edward Bench
1922 - 2016
VETERAN

Sterling Edward Bench, 94 years old, passed peacefully from this life on October 30, 2016, with his loving wife, Donna, at his side. Sterling was born June 21, 1922, in Fairview, Utah, to Rees Edward and Georgia Eden Christensen Bench. He was the eldest of three children, including: John Bench and Carol Handley. Sterling attended Provo High School where he played on the men's tennis team, a game that he loved and played throughout his life, and served as the student manager, a position that played to one of his strengths in financial management and prudence.

He received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Utah State, which was interrupted during his junior year for service in the United States Army during World War II, where he served in the Pacific Rim as 1st Lieutenant. After graduation, he began his career in civil engineering that included employment at several Utah-based companies. It was during this time he met and married Donna Thomander in the Salt Lake Temple and they began their family in Utah. In the late '50s, Sterling joined Kaiser Engineering, a job that moved his family to the San Francisco Bay Area where he and Donna raised eight children on three acres of horse property with plenty of room for outdoor adventure.

After retirement from Kaiser, Sterling and Donna relocated to Provo, Utah, where they built a home and spent the next 37 years. During their time in Provo, Sterling enjoyed tennis, managing rental property, taking care of his parents and in-laws, temple service, and dinner groups with friends. He and Donna served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pennsylvania.

Sterling is survived by his wife, Donna; his children: Doug (Janet) Bench, Elaine (Dana) Ferguson, Jaynann (Loyd) Lillywhite, Mary Ellen (Charlie) Jeppson, Tom (Janine) Bench, David (Carrie) Bench, Allyson (Brett) Wood, and Diane Thibault. Sterling and Donna have 36 grandchildren and 70 great grandchildren. Sterling is preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
