--------

My 3rd-great-grandfather, Joseph Forbes', life history has been extremely challenging to trace between the death of his mother, Julianna Rutter, when he and his siblings were quite young, to Joseph's own multiple marriages, and children with the same name across marriages.

To that end, though I agree fully that James S Forbes and his linked sibling, Margaret Nancy Forbes Scott, are children of Joseph Forbes, I do not believe they are the children of my 3rd-great-grandmother, Delilah Hartley. Rather, I believe Delilah was James S and Maggie's stepmother.

* Joseph Forbes and Delilah Hartley were married 18 Feb 1859 in Bureau County, Illinois, USA
-- Ancestry Member (GSmith6445) located a printed Marriage Affidavit from Bureau County, IL that confirms this date and location
* Joseph's daughter, Margaret Nancy 'Maggie' Forbes was born 20 Jun 1854 (over 5 yrs before Joseph and Delilah married)
* Joseph's elder son, James S Forbes was born ~1853 (~7 yrs before Joseph and Delilah married)
* Joseph and Delilah's 1860 Census includes James (7), Nancy M (6), John H (1) and William A (8 months)
- I do believe that John H and William A are Delilah's children, along with the other children identified and born after the 1860 Census
- I will continue to research to try and find James S and Maggie's mother...for now, I think it is ok to have Delilah listed, just so we do not lose track of James S and Maggie
