John Clyde Mitchell, age 90 of Andersonville, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at the Waters of Clinton Rehabilitation Center.

He was born on July 8, 1926 to the late John and Stella Stanley Mitchell in Anderson County.

He joined the Navy at the age of 17 and was a Naval Armed Guard and First Gunner's Mate.

He fought in the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. John then went on to retire from the University of Tennessee Police Department as a captain.

John was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Andersonville. He will be dearly missed.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sisters, Mary Havens, Lois Golden, and Nell Mitchell.

He is survived by Wife Sue Mitchell Sons Kendell Mitchell and wife Jean of Andersonville Brent Mitchell of Andersonville Kevin Mitchell and wife Gail of Andersonville Sister Elizabeth Lumbert of Heiskell Grand children.John Mitchell, Sarah Spencer and husband Lex, and Sam Mitchell all of Andersonville Great-grand children Trinity Woods, Cameron Woods, and Gabriel Woods all of Andersonville Several nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends

The family will receive friends at the Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton on Friday, October 14, 2016 from 5-7 pm. His funeral service will be at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 11am with the Rev. Ralph Horack officiating.

Interment will follow his funeral service at the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery with full military honors presented by the Campbell County Honor Guard.
