Fugitive Slayer of Wealthy Minneapolis Woman Caught

Man Believed to Be Percival V. Allen* Is Arrested in Los Angeles

Alleged Murderer of Anna Danielson Broke Jail Six Years Ago

A man believed to be Dr. Percival V. Allen, wanted in Seattle as the slayer of Miss Anna Marie Danielson of Minneapolis, who died of poison in July, 1916, was arrested in Los Angeles Friday and turned over to federal authorities.

Dispatches said Allen's arrest came when he was betrayed by Ellen Posz, said to be the daughter of a minister at Rochester, Minn.

The man arrested gave the name of A. E. Woods, but authorities were quite confident that he is the fugitive accused of the murder of Miss Danielson.

Miss Danielson died from the effects of strychnine poisoning in the Sheridan apartments at Seattle, July 15, 1916. Dr. Allen was arrested twice on the murder charge, but escaped from jail both times.

Victim of Mock Marriage

Police investigation at the time of the murder disclosed that Miss Danielson was the victim of a mock marriage a few days before her death. Dr. Allen at that time confessed that he duped the Minneapolis woman into believing she was married to him.

Jewels valued at $2,000 in the possession of Miss Danielson at the time of her death, vanished. The murdered woman left an estate valued at $60,000. An inventory filed five years ago in probate court of Hennepin county by E. Luther Mehn, Minneapolis, attorney for the Danielson estate, showed that the property consisted of Minneapolis and Iowa real estate. The estate went to her brother, Gabriel Danielson, Gowrie, Iowa. Dr. Allen was barred by the courts from particulars in the estate.

Miss Danielson left Minneapolis June 1, 1916, for a trip to the Pacific coast. She met Dr. Allen on a steamer bound from San Francisco to Puget Sound. On July 5 of that year a ceremony took place which she thought was a marriage. Then days later she was dead.

Dr. Allen was held on a statutory charge when he admitted to Seattle authorities that he was not married to Miss Danielson, but had a wife living in Los Angeles. He had told the attending physicians that the woman died from convulsions.

The body was taken to Miss Danielson's old home at Gowrie, Iowa, and buried. The stomach contents were analyzed in a cursory manner at Seattle, but nothing suspicious was found.

Brother Begins Inquiry

Lieut. Wilmot Danielson of the United States Navy, a cousin of the dead woman, began an investigation. The body was exhumed at Gowrie and brought to Minneapolis for an examination at the University of Minnesota. Dr. John O. Taft and Dr. George B. Frankforter, who conducted the post mortem examination, found hypodermic scars on her arm, and strychnine was found in the body.

Dr. Allen escaped from the county jail in Seattle in December, 1916, and was captured the following month at San Bernardino, Calif.

The capture was made by a county constable in the little village of Hamet, Calif., after Allen had spent a month working in various towns in California, principally as a barber. He was extradited and returned to Seattle.

He had been in the Seattle jail less than a month when he escaped again, and police and federal agents have been searching for him for six years in many parts of the United States and in British Columbia.

* Then man arrested in 1923 turned out not to be Percival V. Allen, but was mistaken for him. The man arrested was Harry Roshon (aka Edward S. Wilson), who while in custody admitted to being a serial bigamist.
