6 BIGAMOUS MARRIAGES ADMITTED BY WOOD
Love Pirate Held in L. A. Confesses to Amazing Crime Record; Was Engaged to Eight Women
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 11 - Harry R. Roshon, known also as "A. E. Wood" and "A. E. Adams," today confessed that he had committed sixfold bigamy, officers say. The alleged confession was made in the district attorney's office.
Six women, scattered throughout the country, were named by Roshon in the tale of his bigamous career, in addition to his original and legitimate marriage in Ohio more than a score of years ago, making a total of seven.
Besides the alleged illegal marriage he already had committed, a book obtained from Roshon contained the names of eight other women to whom, it is alleged, he was engaged.
In addition to this, Roshon declared that at the time of his arrest here, he was on his way to Burlington, Iowa, to marry another woman in that city.
During the course of a grueling examination, Roshon suddenly brought the proceedings to a halt when he declared he was ready to make a statement to the district attorney's office in which he would make a clean breast of his illegal marriage activities.
CONFESSION AMAZES
The officials were amazed at the strange story told by Roshon of his matrimonial conquests.
His original marriage occurred twenty-three years ago in Warren, Ohio, where he married Emma L. Johns. This marriage existed serenely for nineteen years, and three daughters were born. Then, separating from his wife in 1920, his other marriages followed in rapid order.
Without going out of Warren, Ohio, he married Della Whalen, four years ago. In this marriage he used the name of H. A. Reid. This affair continued for six months, when his original wife caused a bigamy complaint to be issued. Roshon posted a bond of $2,000, and forfeited this sum when he departed in haste from the city.
He came to the Pacific coast and within a few months after leaving Ohio he married Jennie Neuert in Tacoma, Wash., using the name of A. E. Reid. This marriage occurred in the fall of 1919, and lasted until December of that year, when he returned to the middle-West - back to the vicinity of his original home.
In Fort Wayne, Ind., he married Nina R. Kring on April 6, 1920, and they lived at 529 West Washington Street in that city. A few months later, on a pretext, he took leave of this wife and again went West.
HIS NEXT VICTIM
Alma E. Snyder of Spokane was the next woman on his long list of matrimonial affairs. He married Miss Snyder in October, 1920, and deserted her after four weeks.
Roshon made another cross-country jaunt, returning to the wife he had left in Fort Wayne. She was in blissful ignorance of the intervening marriage of the multi-bigamist, or of any other of his affairs, and welcomed him back to their Indiana home. In November, 1922, he finally abandoned this wife, and within a month or two had effected another bigamous marriage in Des Moines, Iowa.
