First Lady of the United States. Wife of 19th President of the United States, Rutherford B. Hayes. Lucy Ware Webb graduated from the Wesleyan women's college in Delaware Ohio at age 18. When Rutherford B. Hayes was 27, he began to court Lucy Webb. They were married in Cincinnati, Ohio, on 30 December 1852, Reverend Dr. McCabe of the Wesleyan University presiding. Rutherford B. Hayes was a General in the Civil War. His men gave Mrs. Hayes the nickname "Mother Lucy" for her devotion to the sick, wounded and dying among them. Mrs. Hayes also made a regular habit of visiting people in prisons, asylums, and state reform schools, providing a caring presence to those who were often forgotten to the outside world. In political life she was a devoted, supportive spouse and popular First Lady. She was known for being upbeat and cheerful, and down to earth, preferring informal gatherings. She believed in temperance, and served no wine or 'spirits' in the White House, which perhaps led to those who wrote about her later, dubbing her "Lemonade Lucy." President and Mrs. Hayes celebrated their wedding anniversary in 1877 at the White House. His term ended in 1881, and the couple retired to their home in Fremont Ohio. The Hayes' Ohio estate was named "Spiegel Grove." They spent eight years there, enjoying retirement, until Mrs. Hayes' death. Lucy Hayes' funeral was held at Spiegel Grove. Reverend Dr. McCabe, who had presided at the Hayes wedding, officiated.
