Mary Stevens Norton Shelton, 95, entered God’s heavenly Kingdom on September 1, 2016 from the comforts of her home in Sugar Land, TX. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Herbert Raymond Shelton, Jr., who entered the Kingdom on October 24, 2007.
Mary is survived by one sister, Sarah “Sally” Winters, 92, of Edmonds, WA; by her four children: Steve Shelton (Rose) of El Campo, TX, Valerie Kodell (Ralph) of Little Rock, AR, Nancy Pruitt of Sugar Land, TX and Lee Shelton (Barbara) of Richmond, TX; by 10 grandchildren: Kacy Bain (Keith), Tracy Appling, Wade Shelton (Amanda), Molly Volek (Darren), Angela Coulter (James), Laura Birmingham (Aaron), Melinda Sparks, Sarah Lemmon (Bryan), Stephanie Stegemeier (Richard) and Rachel Barnes (Scott); and by 20 great grandchildren: Amber and Ethan Bain, RaeAnna and Steven Appling, Charlie and Sophie Shelton, Kaiden and Kason Volek, Ian and Angus Coulter, Roman, Robyn and Reagan Birmingham, Hunter Sparks, Scarlett Lemmon, Luke, Owen and Reid Stegemeier, and Renee and Kaitlyn Barnes.
Mary was born May 7, 1921 in San Antonio, TX to Arthur Whiteley Norton and Annie Katherine Satcher Norton. While attending elementary school, she played baseball and even earned an NRA marksman certificate with a .22 caliber rifle! After her family moved to Sugar Land in 1934, she attended Sugar Land Jr High and High School, where she was the drum major of the drum and bugle corps. Graduating in 1939, she attended business school after which she was employed at Sugar Land Industries Mercantile Store and then Imperial Bank and Trust. During World War II, she was a U.S. Army Air Force observer and a Red Cross water safety instructor. On October 19, 1944 she married Herbert Shelton at the First Presbyterian Church in Dallas, TX while he was on leave from the U.S. Navy. They eventually settled in Sugar Land where they raised their four children. After the children were all school-age, Mary worked at the Sugar Land State Bank and later at the Sugar Land Feed Mill (MixRite / Gulf Coast Feeds).
Mary was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sugar Land, where she was very active for many years in Women of the Church and other adult and youth ministries. She was a wise and gracious lady, a dedicated wife and mother, and a friend to all. Throughout her life she demonstrated the kindness and gentleness of a true Christian heart. She was always ready and willing to serve, to be a friend, counselor and advocate. Mary had great love and skill for sewing, smocking and needlepoint, producing numerous beautiful creations for family, friends and charitable causes. She was extremely talented at making homemade candy, baking delicious homemade bread, pies and rolls for family, friends and guests. She was an attentive hostess, always ensuring that everyone’s wants and needs were met. Always thankful, always appreciative, always content with God’s many blessings; the quiet example of her beautiful life lives on through her loving family.

Celebration Service: 10:30am – 11:30am Tuesday, September 6th
