U.S. VeteranCDR Cyrus M. Day, III, M.D., 81, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, formerly of Henderson, Kentucky, died Sunday, August 28, 2016, at his home.

Born on August 28, 1935, in Evansville, Indiana, he graduated from Barrett Manual Training High School in Henderson, Kentucky, in 1953. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1953 until 1955. He graduated from the Kentucky School of Embalming in 1956 and was a licensed Embalmer and Funeral Director. Following this, Dr. Day attended the University of Louisville, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in 1962, after which he attended the University of Louisville School of Medicine, receiving an M.D. degree in 1966. He was in General Practice in Louisville for several years before serving a residency in Anesthesiology. Dr. Day returned to the U.S. Navy as a physician in 1974 and remained in the Navy until he was medically retired in 1988. While on active duty, Dr. Day served as Division Surgeon of the Third Marine Division and Force Surgeon of the Third Marine Amphibious Force in the western Pacific. He then served as Commanding officer of the U.S. Naval Hospital Taipei, Taiwan, in the Republic of China. He later attended the USMC Command and Staff College in Quantico, Virginia. After this, he served as Division Surgeon of the Second Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Dr. Day retired in Jacksonville, North Carolina, where he remained until his death.

Dr. Day attended the Tar Landing Baptist Church in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He was a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, and the Retired Officers Association and the Officers Club of Camp Lejeune. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Louisville Scottish Rite bodies, and Kosair Shrine.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home. The Reverend Amy Cates will officiate. Burial will be in Fernwood Cemetery with full military rites performed by American Legion Worsham Post No. 40.
