Mr. Jeffus died Thursday morning at his residence after his battle with cancer.
He was born Jan. 29, 1928 in Houston County near Lovelady to the Rev. Lemuel F. and Lettie Mae Bagwell Jeffus.
Mr. Jeffus graduated from the Common Wealth College of Mortuary Science and was a funeral director with Bailey & Foster Funeral Home for 50-plus years, attending and directing over 15,000 services. He was a rancher and community leader. He was a member of the First Baptist Church for 52 years, a deacon and Sunday School teacher for 50 years, choir director 18 years, a member of the Lions Club, Grapeland Community Council, past master of the Grapeland Masonic Lodge No. 473, chairman of the Grapeland Housing Authority for 41 years, and Master of Ceremonies for the Grapeland Peanut Festival for 40 years.
He also was a council member on the board that helped to bring Nucor Corp. and the Alexandria Manufacturing to Grapeland. He was a member of the Grapeland Hospital Board, Grapeland Volunteer Fire Department and the Grapeland EMS.
Mr. Jeffus was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Caleb Edward Jeffus; four sisters, Virginia Johnson, Frankie Mae Atkinson, Locie Wright and Billie Nell Jeffus; four brothers, Dan Jeffus, Finon Jeffus, Gleason Jeffus and Ira Jeffus.
He is survived by his wife, Vernell "Sally" Jeffus of Grapeland; daughter, Kathy Richmond and husband Mike of Grapeland; son, Ricky Jeffus and wife JoLen of Grapeland; granddaughters, Adrianne and husband Dr. Trumon Davis of Tyler, Melanie Hutcherson and husband Michael of Grapeland, and Nicole Jeffus of Waco; grandsons, Jon-Michael Rhone and wife Jamie of Palestine, Zane Rhone and Caleb Rhone, both of Grapeland; and one great-grandson, Trumon Walker Davis of Tyler; sister, Jean Adams of San Marcus; brother, David Jeffus and wife Daisy of Nacogdoches; sisters-in-law, Nelma Jeffus of Frankston and Kay Jeffus of Trinity.
Pallbearers will be David Mack Jeffus, Bobby Jeffus, Pat Jeffus, Mike Jeffus, Mark Jeffus, Frank Jeffus, Brad Jeffus, Wayne Atkinson and Kary Adams.
Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bailey & Foster, Grapeland.
