Found in The State (Columbia, SC) 22 November 1976: Mrs. Amanda S. Harter Lott, widow of John C. Lott, died Saturday night in Manor Care. Mrs. Lott was born in Fairfax, a daughter of the late Henry and Harriet Saphire Brant Harter. She attended Draughon's Business College and received a certificate from the Conservatory of Music at Atlanta, Ga. One April 27, 1911, she married John Calhoun Lott, who founded the John C. Lott Agency in 1898. After his death in 1939, Mrs. Lott carried on the business for about 15 years. Mrs. Lott was one of the first members of the Historic Columbia Foundation and was a founder of the Robert Mills Historic House and Park. She has given many artifacts to the foundation from her personal collection of furnishings. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Woman's Club, the Columbia Museum of Art, the S. C. Historical Society, the Columbia Garden Club and the Wade Hampton Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. When she left her home, "Idlewood," on the outskirts of Columbia, she moved into the Columbia Hotel. After the University of South Carolina purchased the Columbia Hotel and it became a girls' dormitory, Mrs. Lott maintained her apartment there. On her 90th birthday in 1967 she was said to be "one of the favorite girls in the dorm." Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Services will be at noon Tuesday in the First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Hugh W. McClure III and the Rev. Dr. J. Norton Dendey. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
