Found in The State 25 August 1939: John Calhoun Lott, 71, died at his residence, "Idlewood," 4201 Devine street, at 8:15 last night following an illness which started last Tuesday morning when he suffered a stroke. Mr. Lott was born in Johnston, a son of Samuel P. Lott and Mahala Bartley Lott. He had lived in Columbia for 40 years, during which time he became well known. Mr. Lott had been in the insurance business since he came to Columbia to live. A quiet, Christian man, he was an elder in the First Presbyterian church. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Amanda Harter Lott, and one sister, Mrs. E. D. Faust of Ocala, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted from the residence at 4:30 this afternoon by the Rev. J. W. Jackson, his pastor, assisted by the Rev. T. F. Wallace. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery.
