She was named Willard Beatrice, but always called Jodie, and was the last surviving child born to Hattie Lou Harbin. Jodie's father, James Albert Shields, was a poor 'dirt farmer' in Oklahoma when she was born in 1925. When Jodie was an infant, she often spent her days on a blanket with the rest of the children, while their mother worked the fields along side her husband. One day it was decided by her paternal grandmother that she and her husband would take Jodie in to live with them. Jodie lived very near her parents and siblings, but she never again lived under the same roof with them. When Jodie was barely 2 years old, Hattie Harbin Shields died along with her last born child, leaving her four children motherless. The remaining family eventually made their way to California picking crops along the way.

By 1942, at the age of 17,Jodie met and married Troy Vernon DeMoss. Nine months later Troy, called 'Buster' by all, enlisted in WWII and was a 'waist gunner' in training when he crashed in Louisiana in February of 1944. His daughter was born 6 months later and was named Troyce Vernice. The following year Jodie married Lee Warren Osborne and they had 2 sons together, Lee Warren Jr and Lynn Wayne Osborne.

Jodie wished to be cremated and, although she has a burial plot reserved at the Pajaro Valley Memorial Park, her ashes are being held by her Daughter, Troyce DeMoss Valentine.
