DANIEL LEFFLER DIES SUDDENLY OF HEART ATTACK

Was Active in Clearfield Business, Civic and Political Affairs for Over Quarter of Century

SERVICES SATURDAY

Daniel Leffler, Clearfield postmaster, died suddenly at the Clearfield Memorial Hospital at 12:30 a.m. today. He was 52.

Apparently in good health Mr. Leffler had attended a Kiwanis Club meeting last evening. About 9:30 while standing in front of Bloom Drug Store, he said suddenly that he felt weak. After going into the drug store, he collapsed. A physician was notified and he was taken to the hospital.

Death was caused by a heart attack.

Active in Clearfield Business, civic and political affairs for more than a quarter of a century, he was one of the community's best-known citizens.

Born at Millerstown, Pa., on September 3, 1886. he came to Clearfield in 1913 with the Huntingdon and Clearfield Telephone Company. He was later in charge of the commercial department.

He left the telephone company in 1920 to become secretary-treasurer of the Gearhart Lumber Company and held an interest in the company since that time.

Named acting postmaster by President Roosevelt on December 11, 1933, he became postmaster the following year and on April 15, 1939 was appointed to the position permanently.

He was appointed president of the board of trustees at the Huntingdon State Industrial School during the administration of former Governor George H. Earle and served in that capacity until last month.

Prominent for his part in many local civic enterprises, he was a former member of the Board of Governors of the Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of the Kiwanis Club, was a former member of the Jaffa Shrine, and until his death a member of the Blue Lodge No. 364, Clearfield Chapter, Clearfield Council and the Williamsport Consistory of the Masonic order. Until several months ago he was one of the members of the board of trustees of the Clearfield Times.

A leader of the Democratic Party in the borough and county for years, he served two full terms of two years each and part of another term as Democratic County Chairman.

Surviving are the widow, Estella B., two daughters, Rosemary and Esther, both at home and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. H. A. SHuler of Liberpool, Pa.; Miss Mary Leffler at the parental home in Millersburg; Mrs. B. A. Peters of Altoona; Joseph, a twin brother, of Westfield, N.Y. and William of Massilon, Ohio. His parents preceded him to the grave.

Funeral services will be held from the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., with Rev. Aaron C. Bennett officiating. Interment will be made in Hillcrest Cemetery.
