Scott was the husband of Barbara R. Hancock of Alexandria VA ,the son of Robert E, Hancock Jr. of Jacksonville FL and Grace Aileen Holton Damron of Fairfax VA. He enlisted in the US Navy on February 21 and entered service on June 19 1967 in Jacksonville FL. In Vietnam he was assigned to H&S Company and attached to Company I as a Hospital Corpsman, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the Tet Offensive, having been engaged in fire fights throughout the night with the NVA, on the morning of February 24 the Company Command Group joined the Marines of Company I, who had spent the night in a defensive position near the La Chau village complex in Hieu Duc District.

With the order given to attack the enemy, moving forward the men once again encountered stiff resistance from the enemy who had consolidated their forces in fortified positions. Supporting arms were requested and an additional platoon from Company K was deployed to reinforce the Marines who were under extreme and accurate fire from the large NVA force. The battle raged on throughout the day and with the approach of darkness the firing became sporadic, the enemy force appeared to have withdrawn. One of the Marine casualties was HM2 Hancock, he had been killed in action as a result of hostile rifle fire

* HM2 Eugene S. Hancock was presented the Navy Cross Medal posthumously "For extraordinary heroism ....on 24 February 1969".
