Merrill Jones 'Pete' Miller was killed in a head-on car crash at Victor, Iowa on Sunday, July 6, 1958. He was a passenger in a car driven by his son-in-law Melvin Sydnes, husband of Opal Miller. Merrill Miller and Melvin Sydnes were traveling to visit Merrill's wife, Effie Terry Miller, who was a patient at the Oakdale, Iowa sanitarium for tuberculosis. Melvin Sydnes suffered severe injuries and was handicapped until his death in December 1964.

The other car in the Victor, Iowa crash was occupied the Robert McCauley family of West Des Moines, Iowa. Robert McCauley, his wife Nancy, and seven year old daughter Kathy had broken bones.
