Elias Smith Murphy, Jr., 90, died peacefully on July 19, 2016 in Holladay, Utah. Smith was born April 19, 1926 in Ogden, Utah, and was the oldest of three children of Elias Smith Murphy and Frances Lillian Wanless. He married Roma Jean Hammond (1928-2015) on June 11, 1951 in the Logan LDS Temple.
Smith is survived by his five sons: David S. (Heidi) of Lynchburg, Virginia; Stephen R. (Robin) of Mountain Home, Idaho; Mark H. (Nancy) of Etiwanda, California; Brian W. (Shari) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and James M. (Sally) of Sandy, Utah; 24 grandchildren, and 50 great-grandchildren, and his sister Gloria Murphy Law.
Smith attended BYU where he graduated with a B.S. degree in physics. After serving in the U. S. Navy during World War II, he served a three-year LDS mission in France. He earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in nuclear physics from Colorado State University after his marriage to Roma Jean. He worked as a physics professor at Washington State University and Central Washington University and then as a research scientist and consultant. Smith and Roma Jean served together on three LDS missions, for ten years as volunteers at the Utah State Prison, and for ten years as LDS Temple ordinance workers.
A viewing will be held on Friday, July 22, 2016, 6:00- 8:00 p.m. at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary at 3401 S. Highland Drive Salt Lake City, UT 84106. Private family services and burial will be held at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to Primary Children's, or Shriners Children's Hospital .
