Deborah Jane Walter, daughter of Thomas Ustick Walter and Mary Ann Elizabeth Hancocks, was a native of Philadelphia. She married Martin Edwin Harmstead, son of James and Sarah Harmstead, on 1 May 1849 in Philadelphia. The couple settled first in Philadelphia and, later, Camden, New Jersey. They were the parents of three children. Deborah was widowed in 1865. She died at the age of 58 and was interred in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia on 29 Mar 1887.
