RITES HELD ON FRIDAY
John W. Smith, more familiarly known as Sager" to his many friends, died at the county home near this city Wednesday afternoon, November 23, 1949, of an atherosclerotic heart ailment, death following an illness of several months. The body was removed to the Hale & Polin Mortuary here and prepared for burial, remaining in the chapel there until time for final rites, which were held at the Springfield Baptist Church at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, The Rev. W.L. Hellams, officiating. Interment was on cemetery Hill. The son of Stephen and Emiline Young Smith, Mr. Smith was born and reared in Washington County ans was engaged in farming three quarters of a century. He was 93 years old and prior to his last illness enjoyed unusually good health, being one of the strongest men for his size in this county for many years. Surviving Mr. Smith are three daughters, Mrs. Elmer Hendren (Margaret), Chicago; Mrs. Will Noe(Emma), Mayfield; Mrs. Mattie Kayes, Borden, Ind.,; five sons, Jerry Smith, Lebanon, Will Smith, Buckner Station, Goebel Smith, Mt. Washington: Gola Smith, Harrodsburg and Buford Smith, this county; one sister, Mrs. Annie Gamble, this county and twenty-three grandchildren.
