Harold was the son of Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Sherrill and Mettie E. Greer, who married on on 19 Jun 1907 in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan. I found six children for them--Lorene I. (25 Apr 1908), Harry I. (10 Dec 1909), Harold Edward (15 Oct 1911), John Franklin (25 Jul 1920), Mary Jane (27 May 1925), and Helen Gene (17 Mar 1927).

I found them on the 1910 Census, living in Middleport, Iroquois Co., Illinois, where Frank, aged 34, was a foreman at a railroad station. Mettie, aged 23, reported that she had had two children and that both were still living. There with their parents were Lorene, aged 2, and Harry, aged 2 months. Living with the couple was Frank's widowed mother Caroline, aged 76. She died six years later on 23 Jan 1916.

By the 1920 Census, Frank and Mettie had moved the family to Dover, Racine Co., Wisconsin. Frank, aged 43, was working as a section boss for the railroad. Mettie, aged 32, was home with Lorene, aged 11, Harry, aged 10, and Harold, aged 8. Son John would join the family six months later on July 25th.

Seven years after that census, Harold's sister Lorene married Clifford S. Start on 15 Jan 1927.

Sadly, two years later, the family lost son and brother Harry on 24 Mar 1929. He was only 19 years old, victim of cerebral meningitis triggered by an infected boil in his nose.

The 1930 Census revealed that the family had again relocated, this time to Tippecanoe Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. Frank, aged 48, was trying his hand at farming. Mettie, aged 44, was keeping house. At home with her were Harold, aged 18, John, aged 9, Mary Jane, aged 4 almost 5, and Helen, aged 3. Lorene was living in Plymouth with husband Clifford and their two children—Charles, aged 2, and Phyllis, aged 8 months.

Harold married wife Olive Isabelle Seymour on 22 Feb 1936 in Argos, Marshall Co., Indiana. They welcomed daughter Sue Ellen on 30 Sep 1936. Sadly, she died four months later on 20 Jan 1937, victim of influenza and bronchial pneumonia.

Perhaps the birth of son Robert Lee on 24 Feb 1939 brought a measure of joy back to the couple.

The three of them appeared together on the 1940 Census, living in Bourbon, Marshall Co., Indiana, where Harold, aged 28, was noted as a trailer worker. Olive, also aged 28, was home with 1-year-old Robert.

A year after that census, a son was born on Valentines Day, 14 Feb 1941. Sadly, he did not survive the day, victim of anencephaly, an incomplete formation of the brain.

On 22 Feb 1986, Harold and Olive celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. They shared fifty seven years together before death parted them, first claiming Harold six days shy of what would have been his eighty second birthday on 9 Oct 1993, victim of heart failure precipitated after a hip fracture. Olive only lived another two years without her helpmate and companion, departing this earth on New Year's Eve, 31 Dec 1995 at age 84.

On his death certificate, Harold was noted as a service technician in the heating and cooling industry.

(Note: Olive's Find-A-Grave memorial has her in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in South Bend, but she is here in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Bourbon with husband Harold and her two children.)
