Frank (preferred) was the son of Henry Sherrill and Caroline Green, who married circa 1850. In 1900 Caroline reported that she had had nine children. In 1910, she reported fourteen. I found the names of nine— Isaac Henry (22 Apr 1852), Mary Levina (1854), Lydia Ann (1856), Emma (c.1864), Nettie F. (c.1867), William (c.1869), Maggie B. (c.1873), Benjamin Frankin (23 Jul 1875) and Armedia (c.1877).

I found the family on the 1860 Census, living in Buchanan, Iroquois Co., Illinois with a Middleport P.O., where Henry Sherrill, aged 24, was farming for a living. Caroline, aged 23, was home with their three young children—Mary, aged 5, Lydia, aged 4, and Isaac, aged 3.

The 1870 Census placed them in Middleport, Iroquois County with a Watseka P.O. Henry, aged 41, was busy farming. Caroline, aged 35, would have had her hands busy at home tending to the needs of their six children—Isaac, aged 18, Levina (aka Mary), aged 15, Lydia, aged 13, Emma, aged 6, Nettie, aged 3, and William, 1 year old.

There were some weddings in the decade following that census. Son Isaac married Ardenia Brown on 10 Dec 1874, daughter Mary married James D. Daniels on 7 Apr 1875, and daughter Lydia married Garret H. Clawson on 8 Apr 1880, all three marriages taking place in Iroquois County, Illinois.

The rest of the family was still in the same place in 1880. Henry, aged 53, was still farming. Caroline, aged 48, still had six children at home to take care of—Emma, aged 16, Nettie, aged 11, William, aged 9, Maggie, aged 7, Benjamin (aka Frank) and Armedia, aged 3.

Two years after that census, the family lost husband and father Henry on 27 Aug 1882 at age 55.

With no 1890 Census still around to check in on the family, we have to fast forward to the 1900 Census. Daughter Armedia had married Jedy D. Dukes on 18 Nov 1897, and mother Caroline and brother Frank were with them. They were living in Stockland, Iroquois County, where Jedy, aged 42, was farming. Armedia, aged 23, was home with son Robert H., aged 1. Caroline, widowed, aged 65, reported that she had had nine children and that all nine had survived to that census. Frank was 24 years old that census year.

Seven years after that census, Frank married Mettie E. Greer on 19 Jun 1907 in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan. Mettie was the daughter of John Greer and Nancy Sells. I found six children for Frank and Mettie- Lorene I. (25 Apr 1908), Harry I. (10 Dec 1909), Harold E. (15 Oct 1911), John Franklin (25 Jul 1920), Mary Jane (27 May 1925), and Helen Gene (17 Mar 1927).

I found them on the 1910 Census, living in Middleport, Iroquois Co., Illinois, where Frank, aged 34, was a foreman at a railroad station. Mettie, aged 23, reported that she had had two children and that both were still living. There with their parents were Lorene, aged 2, and Harry, aged 2 months. Living with the couple was Frank's widowed mother Caroline, aged 76. On this census, Caroline reported that she had had fourteen children, but that only seven had survived to that census. Eldest son Isaac had died in 1904, accounting for one of the lost children.

Six years after that census, Frank's mother Caroline passed on 23 Jan 1916 at age 84.

By the 1920 Census, Frank and Mettie had moved the family to Dover, Racine Co., Wisconsin. Frank, aged 43, was working as a section boss for the railroad. Mettie, aged 32, was home with Loren, aged 11, Harry, aged 10, and Harold, aged 8. Son John would join the family six months later on July 25th.

Seven years after that census, daughter Lorene married Clifford S. Start on 15 Jan 1927.

Sadly, two years later, the family lost son and brother Harry on 24 Mar 1929. He was only 19 years old.

The 1930 Census revealed that the family had again relocated, this time to Tippecanoe Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. Frank, aged 48, was trying his hand at farming. Mettie, aged 44, was keeping house. At home with her were Harold, aged 18, John, aged 9, Mary Jane, aged 4 almost 5, and Helen, aged 3. Lorene was living in Plymouth with husband Clifford and their two children—Charles, aged 2, and Phyllis, aged 8 months.

In 1940, the family was zoned into Plymouths' Center Township. Frank, aged 64, was still actively farming. Mettie, aged 52, was keeping house. The nest was still half full. At home with their parents were John, aged 19, Mary Jane, aged 14, and Helen (enumerated as Jean H.), aged 13. Son Harold had married wife Olive by then and they had welcomed a son named Robert circa 1939.

Five years after that census, the family lost husband and father Frank on 30 Nov 1945 at age 70, victim of a heart-related ailment. Mettie had him laid to rest next to their son Harry. Mettie lived another fifteen years without her helpmate and companion, not departing this earth until 8 Dec 1960 at age 72, succumbing to cardiac arrest. The children had her laid to rest next to husband Frank. When daughter Mary Jane died in 1969, she took her place next to her mother.
