Bertha Almira Thompson was born in Abilene, Kansas, on April 22, 1881 to Andrew Jackson "Jack" Thompson and Margaret Elizabeth McLain Thompson. The family later moved to Jefferson County, Kansas. On May 1, 1899 she married Otis Franklin Burgoyne at Oskaloosa, Kansas. Thereafter, in 1917, they moved to Eden, Idaho.

Bertha and Otis Burgoyne had three daughters: Margaret died in early childhood; Hattie "Maye" (1901-1983) and Fannie (1903-1965).

Grandchild's tribute: Granny loved basketball and supported the Eden Varsity basketball team for many years by attending all their games. She was a familiar figure at every school function or community gathering. She was rather short in statute, about 4'10", but she had a sweet disposition. She was a wonderful seamstress. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren as if they were her own.
