Mrs. Elizabeth Devereux Smith age 89, of Forrest City, Arkansas died Sunday, September 7, 2008 at Willow Bend Nursing Home in Marion. Mrs. Smith was born June 12, 1919 in the Newcastle Community. She was the daughter of Stephen A. Devereux and Hugh Ella Hamilton Devereux. She was a graduate of Forrest City High School and attended Arkansas State University. She worked as a bookkeeper at the First National Bank of Eastern Arkansas and was an administrative assistant at Central Elementary School for 30 years. She was a lifelong Methodist and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Forrest City for over 60 years. Mrs. Smith married Dewitt Henderson Smith Jr. in 1940 and he preceded her in death in 1998. She is survived by a son, Dewitt H. Smith III, of Bella Vista, Arkansas; a brother, Arthur Louie Devereux of Widener; two grandchildren, Brandon A. Smith of Florence, South Carolina and Whitney D. Smith of Columbia, South Carolina; two great grandchildren, Jarratt. J. Smith and Dewitt H. Smith IV both of Florence. She was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Katherine Morgan, Louise Armstrong and Frances Harris and 2 brothers, S.A. Devereux and Hugh Devereux. Services will be Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Forrest City. Burial will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home tonight. The family request memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church. Online registry stevensfuneralhome.net.
