A son of James Kennedy and Helen 'Ellen' McDougall, his parents were Scots immigrants to Canada's Quebec province. They married 31 Dec 1827 at Montreal's St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, and afterwards resided at Huntingdon, then a remote district near Chateauguay, where their eldest children were born.

James Kennedy brought his family to Illinois after March of 1841, and was enumerated there at Mount Vernon in Lake County on the 1850 U.S. census.

Shortly after Thomas was born, James brought his family to California's Santa Clara County where Thomas first appears in census records.

He married Caroline Sonora Blanchard, a daughter of Jonathan Blanchard who founded Wheaton College. Wed on 08 Dec 1875 in Dupage County, Illinois, they made their home in California, where all six of their children were born.

Long a resident of San Jose, Thomas moved to nearby San Francisco at about the time his brother James did, in 1886.
