Fred ' Gene' Cox
ARCADIA -- Fred E. "Gene" Cox, 73, of Arcadia died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Arcadia United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Janet Burgel will officiate. Burial will be in the Arcadia City Cemetery, with military rites provided by the Engineer Maintenance Company of Omaha and American Legion Post 251 of Arcadia.
There will be no visitation. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cox was born Dec. 14, 1929, at Guernsey, Wyo., to Eugene J. and Velma Mae (Lybarger) Cox.
Survivors of the immediate family include four sons and three daughters-in-law, David E. Cox of Aspen, Colo., John R. and Tracy Cox of Omaha, Douglas W. and
Nancy Cox of La Vista and Alan L. and Susan Cox of Eagle.
Survivors also include five grandsons and one granddaughter.
Mr. Cox's father passed away when Fred was a young boy. His mother remarried Elmer Armstrong, who was his father figure. Fred spent his early school years at District #4. In 1942 and 1943 he attended high school in San Antonio, Texas. He returned to Arcadia in 1944 to finish his schooling, graduating from Arcadia High School in 1947.
He worked various jobs before joining the Marine Corps in 1949. He served in Korea from 1950 to 1951. He was decorated with the Bronze Star for valor. Fred returned home to Arcadia and worked at the Arcadia Hardware Store.
On June 2, 1957, he married Shayrell M. Holcomb at Arcadia. Fred worked as an electrician and plumber until 1978, when he took over Cox Hardware and Appliance. Fred retired in 1986. Mrs. Cox passed away Dec. 31, 2001.
Gene was the Arcadia Fire Chief for many years, he was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 251 and served on the Valley County Veterans Service Committee. He enjoyed reading, yard work, raising his "critters," tending to his cow and visiting his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather and his wife.
Memorials are suggested to the Arcadia American Legion Post 251.
