Rites Held For Mrs. Armstrong

Velma Armstrong was born October 14, 1907 in Valley County, Nebraska to Henry and Jessie BARR Lybarger and died December 27, 1986 at the Heritage Hall in Broken Bow, Nebraska at the age of 79.

Velma was raised in Valley County and attended School District 4. She married Eugene Cox in 1929; they lived in Guernsey, WY for a short time before moving back to Arcadia. To this union a son, Fred, was born. Eugene passed away in 1930.

Velma was later married to Elmer Armstrong on March 23, 1936 at Kearney. They operated a Radio and Appliance Store in Arcadia for several years before World War II. During the war they lived at San Antonio, TX for three years. They returned to Arcadia in 1945 and resumed operation of the Radio and Appliance Store. In 1957, they purchased the Arcadia Hardware Store to extend their operation which Elmer continued until his death on September 24, 1980. Velma continued to make her home at Arcadia.

Survivors included one son, Fred Cox, and wife, Shayrell, of Arcadia; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Davidson of Cozad and Zola McKillips of Grand Island.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, six brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Arcadia United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Donald Studley officiating. The organist was Doris Hill and the soloist was Obamae Waddel. Pallbearers were David Cox, John Cox, Doug Cox and Allan Cox. Burial was in the Arcadia City Cemetery, with the Ord Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Arcadia Rescue Unit.
