Hence and Martha raised tobacco and sheep, and he was also a blacksmith. He sheared the sheep and sold the wool. Martha Jane was proficient at spinning, making many clothes for the family.
Hence always accepted payment in gold or silver coins, NEVER PAPER MONEY. When he died, a family member found a trapdoor in the smokehouse--finding a brass kettle full of coins and other containers.
