Chief Petty Officer, US Navy Ret., Elmer Edwin "Whitey" Whiteman, 83, passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2016, in Estancia, New Mexico. He was born on September 22, 1932, in Wagon Mound, New Mexico, to Lessie Quemy (Tull) and William Edwin Whiteman.

He was a graduate of Cimarron High School.

The Whiteman family were early settlers of the Colfax County, NM, area. His family originally came to New Mexico on the Santa Fe Trail from Independence, MO.

He retired from the US Navy Submarine Force after serving for twenty years.

On returning to New Mexico he worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory retiring from there in 1989.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and square dancing. He spent a number of years breeding and raising his beloved Appaloosa horses.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lessie Quemy (Tull) Whiteman-Byrd and William Edwin Whiteman; his son, Keith Whiteman; and a sister, Rozelle Whiteman DeIorio.

Elmer is survived by his wife, Marilyn; two sons, Russell Whiteman of Acworth, GA, and Bryan Whiteman (Tina) of Newton Falls, OH; two step-daughters, Dona Fuerst of Olympia, WA, and Darcy Waters (Joe) of South Bend, IN; a sister, Edith Coffman of Amarillo, TX; grandchildren: Justin Whiteman, Carley Whiteman, Alicia Kulp, and Michael Waters; and great-granddaughter, Italia Whiteman.
