According to the obituary Samuel died March 3, 1889. The tombstone has he died 14 Mar 1889 as well as his bio from 1890. Many tombstones have had wrong dates etched on them and the bio was information given by others rather than the main source. All sources should be used as a guide.

Samuel Bowers, a native of Maryland, who came to West Virginia in 1837, and settled at Wellsburg, where he conducted the flouring mill until 1853, when he removed to Jefferson County and took charge of a mill at McIntire. He also managed a mill at La Grange, now known as Brilliant, and in 1868 took charge of the Tunnel mill, which he conducted until 1880. He died in March 1889. He was one of the best millers of the country, and a worthy citizen. In 1837 he was married to Mary J., daughter of William Harrison, of Steubenville, and by this marriage had fourteen children, six of whom are now living. His widow also survives.

Samuel Bowers, an old citizen of Knox Township, died suddenly at his home at Tunnel Mill Sunday, March 3rd, aged nearly 75 years. He was born at Hagerstown, Md., April 8, 1814 and came to Ohio in 1836, first settling in Zanesville, then to Wellsburg and from there to Tunnel Mill (known as Holt, Ross Township, Jefferson County, Ohio today) He was one of the oldest Millers in Eastern, Ohio. He leaves six children, all grown: William of Steubenville; Albert of Toronto; Mrs. Mary Douglass, Wellsburg; George near Cleveland; and Pearce and Lydia at home.
