Thomas Simmons was born at Loudenville, Richland County, Ohio, Oct. 16, 1833, and passed away at his home in Belmont, Wis., Sunday, Oct. 19, 1919, at 6 pm, having attained the advanced age of 86 years and three days. Mr. Simmons was the third child in a family of eight children, and the last of the number to pass from earth.
At the age of about nine years, he moved with his parents to southern Illinois, where they lived for about two years, from there he drove with a team of oxen to big patch, Grant County, Wisconsin, where he lived until he was 16 years of age. From there he moved to Elk Grove Township where he grew to manhood and spent the active years of his life, following the vocation of farming.
On Feb. 14, 1856, he was married to Katherine Smith of Strawberry, Wis. and to them were born nine children, six boys and three girls, seven of whom survive him: Mrs. W.T. Owens of Loup City, Neb., William J. of Stillwater, Minn., John E. of Salem, S. Dakota, Arthur T., Robert Howie, Charles L of Belmont, Wis., Durward A. of Rockford, Ill. Edith Luella died March 18, 1901, and Laura Etta, May 27, 1901.
In the spring of 1894, Mr. Simmons retired from farming and moved to Belmont, where with his devout and loving wife, who still survives and spent the December of his life, amid the comforts of a well spent and industrious career.
Besides his immediate family, he is survived by twenty grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of the locality in which he lived, and the first 40 acres of land he owned, which is now a part of the Simmons homestead, was purchased by him with a $20 gold piece. He was noted for his honesty, industry and integrity.
The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the ME church, Rev. H. Witherbee of LaCrosse and Rev. Arthur Edwards of Belmont officiating. Interment at Belmont Cemetery.
His six sons, named above acted as pallbearers. He was one of Belmont's oldest citizens and as a mark of esteem all business places were closed during the funeral.
