BIOGRAPHY:
Boutters Matthew Orndoff was born to Allen ‘Aljorn’ Orendorff and Eunice ‘Unie’ Farner on February 25, 1904 in Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa. Boutters nick-name was ‘Jack’.

Even when Jack was young, he was a skilled marksman, hitting the mark every time at moving targets with rocks. When Jack’s little brother, Elbert, was so sick he was not allowed to eat food, his mother Unie would tell Elbert they didn’t have any food. Elbert would perk up and say, ‘Send Jack out to hunt rabbits - he can bring home the food!’ (Source: Story told by sister Glenna, 2001, and well as Jack’s children)

After ‘Jack’s' father died in 1908, his mother Unie remarried a widow with young children, Alex Mills.

‘Jack’ left home when he was young, about 16 years old, and started 'riding the rails; and independent from then on. Because of Jack’s age, riding the rails with mostly adults, he learned very quickly how to take care of himself and became a ‘tough man’.

Jack was a super tremendous athlete. Even though Jack quit school by fifth grade, he was so fast he could outrun the High School athletes. There are many stories and examples of just how fast Jack was!

In 1924 Jack met and married Bertie Velvetta Morgan. They had four children: Carl, Allen ‘A.L.’; Ray, and Melba. They worked and played together as a family. He was a terrific person and father. Jack and Bertie were married 47 years before Jack's death.

Jack’s hobbies included boxing, and he was quick with his hands. Fishing was a favorite hobby. In addition, Jack also enjoyed ‘tatting’, a skill learned from his mother Unie. Jack even had a chest full of his beautiful tatting, which he once gave away to pay for rent.

In 1945 - 46, Jack and Bertie became Church of God members in Vallejo, California and gave their hearts to the Lord. Jack had been a smoker all of his life, and quit smoking immediately, as well as quit drinking. Jack changed completely when he started going to church. He was very active in church, was a chairman, and set a good example.

Jack had various jobs in his lifetime. Jack worked at County Correctional 'Farm', like a Detention Center where people went to after being incarcerated and sentenced. Jack never carried a gun. Jack was tremendously liked by the inmates; he treated them with respect and they treated him with respect. Some even came to Jack’s funeral. The inmates would make gifts to give to him. There was a riot once, and the riot would not have taken place if Jack had been there, but he was off work that week end. The inmates rioted because of the ill-treatment the other guards were giving. Jack retired at age 65.

Jack enjoyed practical jokes and had a super sense of humor. He is described as a happpy-go-lucky person and a self-educated man.

Jack, 67, passed away November 22, 1971. He was preceded in death by his son, A.L. (Allen Lemuel Orndoff).

Survivors include his wife, Bertie; three sons, Carl, Ray, and Melba (Acosta); and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
