James M. Acree was born about 1831 in Madison County, Tennessee, the son of Beverly Dandridge Acree and Susannah Margaret Bowman. As a toddler, his parents moved to the Lower Pine Hills Community of Bayou D'Arbonne, in what was then northwestern Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. The region became southeastern Union Parish in March 1839.

James' mother died when he was still a boy, and his father died in 1844, when he was a mere 13 years old. He and his younger siblings lived with their older brother, Daniel B. Acree, on the Acree farm. James married on 7 May 1855 to Margaret Wilhite, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Wilhite.

James and Margaret acquired their own farm in the vicinity of modern Point, near the old Acree farm and that of his brother, Daniel. They had three children by 1860.

James M. Acree died on 15 June 1864 of unknown causes or circumstances. It is unclear if he died at home or somewhere else. We have no record of his serving in the Confederate military, but many military records from that period are missing.

The Acree Cemetery lay on the edge of his father's old farm, and many of his relatives are buried there. It is not known precisely where James M. Acree is buried.
