Mrs. J. A. Lane was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Bell, early settlers in the town of Lamoni. She was born in Davis City, Nov. 11, I879, and passed away Jan. 3 in Decatur county hospital.

When about three years of age she came to Lamoni. As a child, she watched the construction of the Brick church and other buildings of the new colony. She was graduated from the local high school and then went on for a year and a half to the recently established Graceland college where she studied commercial subjects. She worked in the Herald Publishing house and lived with church leaders of that day.

While at Graceland she met J. Arthur Lane who had come down from Harrison county in western Iowa. Theirs was one of the early Graceland romances. They were married in 1902.

Their first home was on the property just east of the present Lane house. Here the two older daughters were born.

For seven years Mr. Lane worked in the Fleet stores. With this mercantile background, he joined in the purchase of a store with D. M.Vredenburg in Pisgah. From 1902 to 1922 the Lanes lived in towns in western Iowa. In Pisgah, the third daughter was born. They returned to Lamoni to provide educational and religious opportunities for their three daughters.

When a girl, Clara Bell was baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This took place in a pond just north of the present J. C. Bergman house. While her father was out in the missionary field she worked to increase the family income.

When married "Clara and Art" joined in the life of their church so that It became a center for loyalty and a bond through family participation. She joined [Art] in western Iowa and in several congregations near Lamoni when he served as pastor. The parents and the three daughters were close together in this field of faith and service. She played the organ and led the choir in the Pisgah branch. On returning to Lamoni she played the organ in the Brick church until it burned in 1931.

Surviving are her husband: three daughters, Mrs. Thelma Silsby of Lamoni, Mrs. Grace Kanawyer of Reedley, Calif., and Mrs. Alice Chesworth of Lamoni: her sister, Mrs. Ethelyn Sprague of Lamoni; and her two brothers, Ed Bell of St. Louis, Mo., and Harbert Bell of Artesia, Calif.

The funeral service was held in the Coliseum Sunday afternoon. The building was filled to capacity. Roy Cheville preached the sermon. Robert Farnham conducted devotionals.
