Clarence picked cotton with his family as a child and ended his schooling by the eighth grade. Held jobs in the San Joaquin Valley as a warehouse manager, ranch hand and night watchman before starting a successful security firm in 1968.

Clarence Allen holds the distinction of being the only man in California convicted of master minding a killing from a prison cell of someone not in jail. He is also the only person in Fresno County ever convicted of murder in which the victim's body was never found. His son, Kenneth Ray Allen, was convicted of murdering three people, his motive being fear of his father who threatened his son in some manner from prison to plea guilty. His father ordered the murders of Byron Schletewitz 27, Douglas White, 18 and Josephine Rocha 17, all clerks at Fran's Market in Fresno in 1980. His son plead guilty to all three murders.
