Hayward was the son of the late James Colaw and Mary Annis Gragg Colaw. He was predeceased by two brothers, Russell and Vernon Colaw, and three sisters, Monna Feather, Velma Sutton, and Willa Smith. He worked at Howe's Leather as a leather grader, and was a veteran, having served in the US Army during World War II. He married Edna Hevener on Dec 8, 1945. He was a member of the Durbin Church of the Brethren.
