Winifred 'Winnie' Baker
After an eight year battle with the blood disorder MDS, Winnie has found peace, having passed away on March 11. She is survived by her husband, Phil, of 54 wonderful and meaningful years; her two children, Phil Jr. (wife, Jill) and Renee (Scott); three grandchildren, Alex (mom, Ruth Ann), Philip, and Sean; and two sisters, Beryl and Selma.
Born Winifred Irene Osborne in Medway, MA, on December 11, 1939, her parents were Beryl and Franklyn Osborne. She graduated from Medway High School, and later attended secretarial school in Massachusetts. She met Phil while he was stationed at the Quartermaster Corps in Natick, MA, where she was secretary to the Base Commander. She married Phil on November 11, 1961.
Winnie enjoyed her many years with the Festival of Cultures (International Day) at SDSU, which brought thousands of high school students from around the region to enjoy an International experience. She also taught English as a Second Language, for many appreciative learners.
She was an excellent cook and during the 30 years her husband taught at SDSU they welcomed hundreds of International students to their home for a homemade meal. Winnie loved to travel to Spanish-speaking countries with her devoted and loving husband, Phil. She was also active in her prayer group at the Episcopal Church.
A lifelong educator, Winnie and her husband Phil were recipients of the Dorothy and Eugene T. Butler Human Rights Award.
Throughout her treatments at the Avera Prairie Center, she had fun with art projects, which helped the hours to pass more quickly. She felt the nurses at the Prairie Center and the friends she met there were like her second family.
Winnie was a beautiful, devoted human being and will be greatly missed by many. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as three of her sisters, Beverly, Audrey, and Elaine. In place of flowers, the family asks for a memorial remembrance to be given to either the Baker Memorial Scholarship at the SDSU Foundation or the Avera Health Foundation.
The family will be present from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, at Rude's Funeral Home and services will be held Wednesday, March 16, 10:30 a.m. at the St Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings.
