Monroe Underwood Marlowe


Monroe Underwood Marlowe was a son of Thomas Lee and Dorothy E. Haynes Marlowe.

Known siblings were Lola Clara, Lawrence Obe, Dessie Mae Marlowe Lawing, Sara Rebecca, Inez, and Faye Marlowe.

Monroe Underwood Marlowe married Stella L. Tate on July 10, 1947 in Mcdowell County, North Carolina.


Obituary:

Monroe U. Marlowe, Sr., 88, died Saturday, February 9, 2002, at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Marion, NC.

He was born in McDowell County on April 24, 1913 to Thomas Lee and Dorothy Haynes Marlowe.

He graduated from Glenwood High School in 1932 where he was on the basketball team that went to the state finals, and was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church for over 60 years.

He was an Army veteran of WWII stationed in Panama where his unit guarded the Panama Canal. He was a life long resident of McDowell County where he served as the McDowell County Forest Ranger for over 40 years. He was well known to the children of the community as Smokey the Bear and to their parents as an on call fix it handy man.

He loved gardening and enjoyed sharing his harvest with neighbors and friends. He was a former member of the Glenwood Ruritan Club and Volunteer Fire Department.

He was a 50+ year member of the Mystic Tie Lodge, a 50+ year member of the Woodman of the World, and a former member of the Board of Directors for Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Stella Tate Marlowe, a daughter, Margaret Marlowe Blankenship and husband, Ray of Marion, a son, Monroe U. Marlowe, Jr., and wife Pamela E. Marlowe of Roxboro, and a special niece he helped raise, Melanie Marlowe Durham, and husband, Steve. He has seven grandchildren, Eadie Marlowe Carroll, Rorie Marlowe Fredrich, Alex Marlowe, Philip Marlowe, Mandie Zarbano Jones, Stephen Durham and Andrew Durham. He is also survived by sisters, Dessie M. Lawing, Rebecca Bristol, Dot Norton, and brother, Tom Marlowe, all of Marion, and preceded in death by brothers and sisters, J. O. Marlowe, Lela McCall, Lawrence Marlowe, Grover Marlowe, Grayson Marlowe, Faye Marlowe, and Inez Marlowe. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Monday, February 11, 2002 at Glenwood Baptist Church. The family received friends at the church from 2:30 PM until the service began at 4:00 PM. Reverends Jim Brewer, Steve Durham and Harry Nix officiated.

Burial was in the Glenwood Cemetery with Masonic Rites.
